Psychotic Depression

Psychotic Depression Symptoms
Psychotic depression is actually a combination of two severe disorders – psychosis and depression. While many people are familiar with depression, wherein the individual expresses extreme sadness and other symptoms, the awareness of psychosis is relatively less. Psychosis is the condition where the individual loses contact with reality. In short, he/she is unable to grasp reality, and also has a much distorted vision of reality. When a person shows the symptoms of both psychosis and depression, then he/ she can be diagnosed with psychotic depression. Since a patient with psychotic depression has difficulty grasping reality along with suffering from intense sadness, this mental disorder tends to be the most lethal of all such disorders, as it has been found out that a majority of such patients attempt or commit suicide. There are a number of causes of psychotic disorder and it cannot be pin pointed to one single cause. The most common cause is attributed to the abnormal functioning of thyroid gland or the excessive production of cortical hormone during periods of stress. It is also believed that this disorder is hereditary. Whatever, may be the cause, psychotic depression must be treated immediately and with care, and to do so the symptoms must first be identified. Read below to know the various symptoms of psychotic depression.
Signs & Symptoms Of Psychotic Depression
- The most common and obvious symptom that people with psychotic depression suffer from is anxiety. Indeed, anxiety is one symptom that is common in all the forms of depression. In psychotic depression, anxiety is all the more extreme. The patient shows a marked higher level of depression in almost everything. The level of nervousness is also extremely high.
- The patient also suffers from agitation. Even small incidences can make him/her agitated. The person suffering from psychotic depression is always restless and this makes him/her work in haste.
- Another major symptom of patients with psychotic depression is laziness. They get extremely lazy even when it involves doing all the day to day work. Such patients avoid work as much as they can. With time, they become so lazy that they even start avoiding proper hygiene like brushing, bathing etc. Patients start losing interest in any work and prefer to spend the day doing nothing.
- The main symptom that helps in diagnosing psychotic depression is psychosis. A patient starts seeing unreal things. Some patients also complain of hearing voices. Apart from these, the patient may also suffer from hallucinations.
- Insomnia is also prevalent in patients suffering from psychotic depression. As such, they may go sleepless for a long period of time. Because of insomnia, the patients also start getting delusional.
- Mania is another symptom that is quite common in patients suffering from psychotic depression. Mania is manifested by patients in various forms such as displaying excessive amount of energy and speaking quickly. Sometimes, mania can also result in the patient withdrawing from normal activities and generally tending to be inactive.
- The patient experiences extreme sadness. The sadness in case of psychotic depression persists for weeks at a stretch and sometimes even for months.
- Constant suicidal thoughts engage the patients with psychotic depression. Thoughts of death and dying occupy the mind of the patients.

Bipolar1: A Psychotic Experience $24.16 Whilst never really excelling at school, I graduated with the ordinariest of degrees BA Business Studies, specializing in marketing at Teesside Polytechnic. I then had a 20 year career in Marketing with well known employers, earning above average wage. At the age of 29 I had a psychosis and was diagnosed with Bi-Polar Affective Disorder. Over a period of 14 years I experienced eight psychotic episodes where my actions and thoughts were determined by "voices in the head," resulting in periods of psychotic behaviour often ending in police custody. It was dangerous in reality, but amusing in recollection being, banned from a number of establishments and singing "Help" to the County Court in Birkenhead as they tried to charge me with breach of the peace. There then followed subsequent periods of treatment, side-effects and depression. I continued with my career, to the best of my ability, given the impact and seriousness of the condition, but both career and marriage slowly fell apart over time due to its consequences. In 2006 life began to settle down, having found suitable medication and coming to terms with living with Bi-Polar. Circumstances took me very close to suicide and bankruptcy with several changes in unsuitable employment in the last four years. A search for work that did not cause a stressful reaction that could cause further health problems somehow led to employment as a postal clerk at a major organization in Liverpool City Centre. What a strange web we weave. |

The Management of Depression by Checkley, Stuart Edition ILL, 1 $18.49 With a prevalence of 3% to 5% in the general population, depression is the most common mental disorder. Ranging from the almost universal ‘blues’ to very severe psychotic states in which a patient suffers delusions, hallucinations and paranoia, depression is consequently managed by a wide variety of health-care groups, including GPs, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and counsellors. This book attempts to produce a synthesis of all relevant facts about this range of affective disorders and to make sense of the many different ways they present and are treated by health-care workers. The aims of this book are to describe the social, psychological and physical treatments of depression; to indicate the strengths, weaknesses and indications for each; and to show how they may be used together in the management of depression as it presents from primary to tertiary care and at different stages. |

Psychotic Core $43.8 Understanding the psychodynamics of madness is essential to the therapy of most patients, including those who are not diagnosed as mad in the literal sense. This volume draws on Freud, Jung, recent object relation and self psychologies, and, particularly, the work of Winnicott, Bion and Elkin. It describes and critiques the basic ideas on the dynamics of psychoses and provides a framework for interpretation."This book is a rich phenomenological and psychodynamic exploration of "the mad dimension of life," a discussion which has both breadth and depth. Eigen must certainly rank amongst the foremost of contemporary analytic therapists and theorists who are making significant steps in furthering our understanding of madness. Any clinician who has ever attempted to understand the thoughts and experiences of psychotic patients will find much that is illuminating and well described in this book." — Phil Mollon in British Journal of Psychiatry"An extraordinary book. Reading "The Psychotic Core" not only becomes an excursion through the (universal) elements of psychosis, but evolves into an encounter with the psychotic process itself. Eigen is, however, fundamentally a psychoanalyst in his approach and method, and his analytic view constitutes both a framework for interpretation and a mode of knowing. By listening to psychosis, by understanding its presence, by looking at (and interpreting) its symbolizations, we enhance our knowledge of what it means to live in a historical project that finds itself affected by periodic eruptions of a cultural and political madness." — James M. Glass in The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease" (This book) is one of the finest treatises I have ever read on the subject. It is solidly clinical and pragmatic on one hand, and yet it is a piece of exquisite, artistic phenomenology on the other. Eigen’s concept of madness elegantly spans what we ordinarily mean by borderline states as well as the formal psychotic states. The work is a very creatively integrative one. The pigments on his palette include Freud, Jung, Bion, Winnicott, and many others." — James Grotstein in Psychotherapy & Social Science Review(Previously published 1993 by Jason Aronson Inc) |

A Brotherhood of Tyrants $69.51 Napoleon Bonaparte, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin were three tyrants, the effects of whose brutal regimes are still with us. Each attained absolute power, and misused it in a gargantuan fashion, leaving in his wake a trail of hatred, devastation, and death. This remarkable study, while it examines the private and public lives of these three megalomaniacal leaders, is neither history nor biography. Rather, it takes the reader into the terra incognita of relationships between the strange lives of Napoleon, Hitler, and Stalin and the ferocious, bizarre political systems they established. In A Brotherhood of Tyrants, D. Jablow Hershman and Julian Lieb uncover manic depression as a hidden cause of dictatorship, war, and mass killing. Comparing Napoleon, Hitler, and Stalin, they describe a number of behavioral similarities supporting the contention that a specific psychiatric disorder – manic depression – can be one of the key factors in a political pathology such as tyranny. Combining familiar facts from history and psychiatry, Hershman and Lieb have created a new theory suggesting that power and madness are linked by a mental disorder so variable in its effects that it condemns some people to twilight existences in mental hospitals while it propels others to every imaginable success. Focusing on these three dictators of modern history, A Brotherhood of Tyrants argues that manic depression has always been, and continues to be, a critical factor in compelling some individuals to seek political power and to become tyrants. It powerfully demonstrates how this disorder is the source of many of the typical characteristics – including grandiosity and megalomania – of a tyrannical personality, and provides a manual for the identification of the psychotic tyrant. In an epilogue, Hershman and Lieb outline the clinical signs of manic depression as described in the classic studies of the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin (1856-1926). The authors apply these clinical signs and sy |

Cognitive Psychotherapy Toward a New Millennium $159 At the beginning of the new millennium, and after a turbulent development process of almost fifty years, Cognitive Psychotherapy still does not seem to have reached a full epistemological and applicative maturity. However at a clinical level, Cognitive Psychotherapy may be considered as one of the most valid and efficient instruments; it is supported by an enormous mass of research and experimental data covering a numerous series of disorders such as mood disturbances, with particular reference to depression, as well as anxiety, personality and eating disorders. Also recently in the field of schizophrenia several studies have been carried out, capable of suggesting an original cognitive approach to the therapy and rehabilitation of psychotic patients. Along with the classic approach by the Philadelphia School started by A. T. Beck, a pool of further evolutions of the original cognitive paradigm have been taking place and are still under development. Among these, of particular importance are the relational and constructivist approaches. This book is a useful instrument for an extensive review of the varied landscape of contemporary Cognitive Psychotherapy. Starting from the introduction chapter, Cognitive Psychotherapy toward a new millennium, by the Editors, the theoretical chapters of the first part of the book, focus on the great issues of Contemporary Cognitive Psychotherapy. The second part includes a series of chapters dealing with clinical applications. The third part covers almost all psychiatric disorders. This volume will be a greatly useful contribution to the critical reflection about the development of Cognitive Psychotherapy at the beginning of the new millennium. |

Mixed Feelings: Emotional Phenomena, Rationality and Vagueness $61.69 This book opens up a new area of research by not only considering the rationality of such diverse phenomena as ordinary emotions, generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, psychotic depression, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder, but also by evaluating the question whether the vagueness of these diverse disorders and emotions poses an obstacle to the rationality of these phenomena. As these emotional phenomena turn out to be vague on many different levels, an explanation is found for the millennia long dispute of which kind of phenomena fall under the emotions and whether such diverse phenomena as hope and alexithymia fall under the emotions. Since vagueness can be most easily identified in mixed feelings, the rationality of mixed feelings will also be dealt with. |

Oxford Guide to Behavioural Experiments in Cognitive Therapy $64.95 Behavioral experiments are one of the central and most powerful methods of intervention in cognitive therapy. Yet until now, there has been no volume to guide clinicians wishing to design and implement behavioral experiments. Behavioural Experiments in Cognitive Therapy fills this gap. It iswritten by clinicans for clinicians. It is a practical, easy to read handbook, which is relevant for practicing clinicians at every level, from trainees to cognitive therapy supervisors. Following an introduction by David Clark, the first two chapters provide a theoretical and practical background for the understanding and development of behavioral experiments. Therafter, the remaining chapters of the book focus on particular problem areas. These include problems which have been thetraditional focus of cognitive therapy, such as depression and anxiety disorders, as well as those which have only once more recently become a subject of study, such as bipolar disorder and psychotic symptoms. Additionally, it includes some which are still int their relative infancy–physical healthproblems, and brain injury. The book includes several chapters on transdiagnostic problems, such as avoidance of affect, low self-esteem, interpersonal issues, and self-injurious behavior. A final chapter by Christine Padesky provides some signposts for future development. Containing examples of over 200 behavioralexperiments, this book will be of enormous practical value for all those involved in cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as stimulting exploration in both its readers and their patients. |
