Many people suffer from panic attacks and anxiety disorders. Anxiety or panic is an emotional state where you feel uncontrollably worried or nervous. The body goes into a state of feeling nervous or worried that something terrible is about to happen.
Anxiety is usually related to a fear of the future. Because we cannot control the future, we feel powerless to change it, and this brings about anxious feelings. In many cases, the things we are worrying about in the future will not happen at all. But this uncontrollable anxiety can disrupt our life.
Anxiety is related to fear, but it not simply “fear”. There is a distinct difference. Firstly, fear is the feeling that you have when you are in real immediate danger, but anxiety is often completely irrational. Secondly, fear has a specific source, but sometimes the source of anxiety is obscure. Thirdly, fear is easier to get over than anxiety; it can pass quicker.
Anxiety has good and important effects on us sometimes. Because it is like our body’s “alarm”, it reminds us of danger. So our increased state of awareness allows us to do our utmost to get rid of the source of anxiety. Anxiety sometimes gives us this energy to get things done. But in many situations, anxiety is destructive. For example, if you are attacked you can either later suffer from a prolonged anxiety disorder, or begin to live a secluded life.
Panic can reduce your quality of life, because of your extreme fear. A panic attack is often centered on an event or situation. You know that one of your instinctive habits may need to be changed, so a chemical reaction takes place within your body.
For example, when a vehicle charges toward you, you are worried that it will hit you; you are nervous and scared. When seeing others do their job well, you can worry that your own education is not good enough to compete with them, and you fear for your job. In a new environment, you can worry about not being accepted by others, a fear of exclusion by others, and feel nervous or scared. Anxiety is a personal psychological barrier that we put on ourselves.
What can make one anxious? An upcoming test, fear of losing a job, an important date with a beautiful girl, your boss being mad at you, and in fact even fear of future panic attacks themselves. Anxiety is a fear that can be generated by all kinds of negative emotions.
Psychologists say that anxiety is a state which is caused by worrying about some threatening event or some negative prediction, and one becomes highly nervous. What’s more, one may even have problems with psychological and physiological function.
It is believed that anxiety is triggered by multiple causes:
•Congenital genetic qualities. These are something you are born with. For example if you are born with a predisposition for anxiety, then you may encounter anxiety later in life.
•Personality traits. Some people are born with an introverted personality, are not good at self-control or have problems dealing with emergency situations. They become nervous when they meet abnormal conditions. Some people lack self-esteem and lack confidence. Some fear failure and frequently obsess about results. Some have negative expectations of themselves and this can automatically make them more anxious. Sometimes people can be afraid of serious atmospheres, and become introverted and stiff, unable to express themselves. All of these issues can contribute to anxiety.
•Self doubt. Many people hesitate, or dare not to believe in themselves. If they encounter difficulties or strange situations, they can easily give up. Some people worry about their weakness, and their lack of self-confidence makes their anxiety more acute.
•Physiological factors. Some people are too tired or stressed, which In turn destroys their normal sleep, diet, and rest patterns, thus making the psychological pressure increase. This leads to emotional stress when they perform their daily duties.
