How to identify whether you are having a panic attack? Most people feel tightness in their chest. However there are several symptoms that indicate a panic attack. Each symptom may vary from one person to other. Here is a list of certain distinguishing factors that define a panic attack
I was 23 when I had my first panic attack. I was driving in the car on the way back from my parent’s house to Boston on a Sunday evening. I had just started a new job and was under more stress than usual
Panic attacks occur when the anxiety levels soar beyond the tolerable limits resulting in pulsating heart beat nervousness dizziness lack of breath sweating etc. Medications can never be used to treat them as they just offer a temporary mild relief from the physical symptoms and do not treat the root cause. Further medications and drugs tend to be addictive and cause more anxiety than the panic attack itself

Cognitive Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Professionals $33.77 A Cognitive Approach to Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Based on research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, this manual presents for the first time a purely cognitive approach to treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This approach avoids the highly distressing exposure component of exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) that is commonly used to treat the symptoms of OCD. Not only does this cognitive therapy (CT) approach open up the option of psychotherapy to those OCD sufferers who resist exposure-based therapy, it also holds great promise for treating OCD sufferers with mental rituals as well as those who struggle concurrently with depression, anxiety, and other symptoms. The strategies described in this book focus intensively on the intrusive thoughts that can trigger negative beliefs and drive compulsive behaviors. The manual begins with a brief review of current facts about OCD. Then it describes how cognitive therapy can be applied to OCD. The several treatment modules that follow outline a brief three-to-four session approach therapists can use to help clients make real progress on their OCD beliefs and behavioral symptoms. Each module is complemented by a series of client worksheets and handouts. This purely cognitive approach to OCD offers a number of benefits including: CT avoids the discomfort of prolonged exposure and response prevention (ERP) The therapy can be conducted entirely in the therapist’s office CT is especially useful for patients with mental rituals and neutralizing strategies The treatment is based on NIMH-funded research and is empirically supported "Wilhelm and Steketee have produced a step-by-step manual that is eminently practical and well grounded in theory and research. This book provides an evidence-based alternative to traditional behavioral treatments for OCD. It will be required reading for all of my students who treat OCD, and it should be read by anyone who works with this complex problem. It will certainly influence the way I approach OCD in my own practice." -Martin M. Antony, Ph.D., ABPP, director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, ON, and author of When Perfect Isn’t Good Enough and several other books |

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Help for Children and Adolescents $3.95 Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the most common psychiatric problems faced by children, although frequently not diagnosed or treated. OCD is a neurological illness. Many children diagnosed with OCD also turn out to have other brain-based disorders, particularly attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). Psychiatrists sometimes categorize patients who have certain common OCD behaviors as "counters," "cleaners," "checkers," and "hoarders." Childhood OCD can be a truly debilitating disability, not just a minor problem or personality quirk. Children with OCD experience extreme anxiety, embarrassment, sometimes even harassment, because of this disorder. Their OCD symptoms often prevent them from building good relationships, from achieving their best in school, and from having a normal childhood. The effects of this disruption can be painful and lifelong. The good news is that OCD is very treatable. With prompt, consistent intervention, most young people with OCD can wrest back control of their lives. "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder helps parents: Secure an accurate and complete diagnosis Live with OCD in the family: using effective parenting techniques, building support systems, and handling difficult issues Understand medical interventions Explore therapeutic and other interventions, such as cognitive therapy and vitamins or supplements Get care with an existing health plan, even with no coverage of "mental disorders" Navigate the special education system Author Mitzi Waltz, an advocate for children’s neurological issues, has included the stories of dozens of parents and adolescents. |

Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder $3.94 Obsessions generate anxieties; compulsions diminish them. Drs. McGinn and Sanderson demonstrate that if the assumptions governing obsessions and compulsions are challenged, the seemingly closed circle can be broken and an intransigent disorder treated. They model the therapist’s use of cognitive behavioral techniques session by session, scripting the clinical approach to each intervention: Psychoeducation strategies; Cognitive Restructuring; Systematic Exposure; and Response Prevention. Focusing on a single composite case to animate a workable program, the authors manage to cover all bases while leaving room for compassionate improvisation. |

The Relationship Between "Not Just Right" Experiences and Symptom Dimensions of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. $82.68 Anticipatory anxiety has played a large role in contemporary views of understanding and treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, many individuals with OCD do not report anxiety, but rather report a sense of things being "not just right" prior to engaging in repetitive behaviors. The primary purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between "not just right" experiences (NJREs) and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Relationships of OCD symptoms with obsessive beliefs and other domains of psychopathology were also examined. Three-hundred eighty two undergraduate students were enrolled in this study. OCD symptoms were assessed using the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory–Revised (OCI–R). NJREs were assessed using the Not Just Right Experiences Questionnaire–Revised (NJRE–QR) and the Obsessive-Compulsive–Trait Core Dimensions (OC–TCDQ). Participants also completed the Beck Depression Inventory–II (BDI–II), the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS). Stepwise regression analyses suggested that ordering and mental neutralizing were predicted by NJREs. Washing, checking/doubting, and hoarding were predicted by NJREs and harm avoidance. Obsessing was predicted by harm avoidance. Overall, our findings suggest that NJREs play an important role in the various symptoms of OCD. Clinical implications, methodological considerations, and areas for future research are also discussed. |
