Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder
Social Anxiety Disorder and 1 Simple Technique to Beat Your Social Phobia
What is social anxiety disorder? Well, we all have fears and we all have situations or places we would rather avoid. For instance, going for a job interview, passing a driving test, sitting an exam, being alone at night, driving in rush hour traffic, shopping in a crowded supermarket, and so on.
Most people manage to control their fears And Anxiety and get on with their lives. But there are very many people who just cannot cope that way. Their fear and anxiety are so high and intense that it consumes their very existence. They are constantly fearful and on edge, and worry about everyday things in a manner that is totally inappropriate to their significance.
And they are aware that they have this social phobia — for that’s what it is — and that their fears are unreasonable, but they feel totally unable to overcome those fears. There are many such phobias, and social anxiety disorder is just one.
Social anxiety disorder is a phobia centred around the fear, or terror even, of some manner of social interaction that might cause embarrassment. For example, many men find it difficult to urinate in a public toilet if there’s another guy there. Another example of a social phobia is where sufferers are terrified of public speaking, even at a family wedding. And yet other social phobias are that many people don’t like to be touched, don’t like to be watched while eating, being in crowds, etc.
In these types of social situations, their anxiety levels are rapidly increased by their fears to such a level that they trigger a panic attack. And the symptoms of such an attack are truly terrifying; sweating, blushing, tightness across the chest, choking feeling, hyperventilation, dizziness, trembling, racing heartbeat, confusion and even a feeling of impending doom.
The symptoms of a panic / anxiety attack are just so horrendous that the sufferer understandably fears that they will be ridiculed, pointed at, singled out and embarrassed. And this makes their fears even worse. Because of this people with social anxiety disorder will shun social contact, which has a huge impact on their quality of life and life chances.
There are prescription medications that can help to calm them down, and, help to manage or control their mood. But these have to be very carefully administered since they have serious side effects including dependency issues. And they are in reality only addressing the ’symptoms’ of social anxiety disorder, not the underlying cause, which is the very real ‘fear’ that sufferers constantly carry around with them.
This fear is just so intense that it continually builds upon itself so that a sufferer’s anxiety levels continue to rise and can trigger a panic attack at any time. Just the fear of having to go to a job interview can actually cause an attack, for example. It has been referred to as a vicious cycle of anxiety. And like any vicious cycle you have to break out of it in order to cure your social anxiety disorder.

Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder $36.49 Medical understanding of the nature and treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has dramatically increased over the past 15 years. Recent studies have shown that GAD is a common disorder, with one-year and lifetime prevalence rates of approximately 1.6% and 5.1% respectively. Contrary to previously held assumptions, Gad leads to considerable distress and impairment, which translate into substantial personal, social, and financial costs. Research into the nature of GAD has provided a number of theoretically-driven and empirically-supported conceptualizations have spawned cognitive-behavioral treatments for GAD, a few of which have received empirical support in controlled clinical trials. The main objective of this book is to present a detailed analysis of the etiology, assessment, and treatment of GAD by focusing on the cognitive-behavioral model and treatment options for GAD. Following chapters would provide a review of the empirical support for the different models of GAD, a detailed description of the assessment and step-by-step treatment of GAD (including many examples of therapist-client dialogue), and data on treatment efficacy in individual and group therapy. The book would conclude with a description of maintenance and follow-up strategies. There are a disproportionately small number of treatment manuals for effective interventions for individuals with what newer evidence has shown to be an increasingly common and widespread disorder. This handbook would be a useful tool for clinical and counseling psychologists in treatment of GAD, and a welcome addition to our new series. |

Anxiety Disorders in Adults: A Clinical Guide $3.94 Each of the adult anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder) is presented in a separate chapter of this volume. As the rich description of each disorder is a prerequisite for their recognition, understanding and diagnosis, the book focuses on clinical features, psychopathology and the corresponding conceptual issues. There is also an emphasis of etiological factors, pathogenetic processes, and pharmacological and psychological treatments of each anxiety disorder, as adequate treatment depends crucially on the clinician’s understanding of the origins of these conditions and the processes involved in their occurrence. The volume is guided by a practical need to present the anxiety disorders as they occur and as they are treated in the "real world." As such, this work is intended to be a state-of-the-art reference for clinical practice, aiming to balance and integrate what is currently known about anxiety disorders and their treatment. It contains descriptions of the relevant diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, practical tips, and treatment recommendations for the commonly encountered clinical situations. The book is most useful to psychiatrists, primary care physicians, clinical psychologists, other mental health workers, and physicians in training. It is also of interest to a general audience. |

Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V $73.99 Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression (MD) form the largest group of common mental disorders. These two conditions often occur together, and emerging evidence suggests several similarities between them. As we move toward revising the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" for DSM-V, "Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Refining the Research Agenda" for DSM-V explores the nosologic relationship between GAD and MD. In this comprehensive manual, more than 45 contributors cover a wide range of empirical and conceptual issues that face clinicians and researchers working with GAD and MD today. This book acts as a guidepost for the entire DSM process. It reviews recent scientific advances in our understanding of the interrelationship between GAD and MD, summarizes the body of evidence into a few broad conclusions, and reflects on the implications of these findings for future nosologic efforts. The contributing authors review empirical data from a variety of perspectives-including genetics, biology, treatment, development, course, predictors, disability, and psychosocial stressors-and then integrate results from research on all these diverse validators to come up with a single "bottom-line" recommendation regarding the relationship between GAD and MD. In addition, the book considers conceptual issues, such as criteria for results from validators, the relevance of results on symptoms of anxiety and depression, weights of different classes of validators, and the rules for assigning disorders into categories. And finally, it addresses the question of what new kinds of data could be gathered that would help to clarify the relationship between MD and GAD more definitively. Each chapter includes tables, charts, and references to enhance the evidence presented on such diverse topics as: A thorough review of the genetics of GAD and MD The role of psychotropics in distinguishing between GAD and MD Biological and treatment aspects of GAD and MD Psychometric aspects of GAD and MD Childhood risk factors associated with GAD and MD Common mental disorders across cultures "Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V "develops operationalized criteria for nosologic decisions that enable clinicians to bridge the gap between data to diagnostic recommendations. Not only does the methodology of investigating an active interchange between empirical and conceptual perspectives shed new light on the relationship between GAD and MD, but it also carries implications for the rest of DSM-V. |

Shy Children, Phobic Adults: Nature and Treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder $33.07 This book describes the clinical presentation of social anxiety disorder, presents theoretical perspectives on its etiology, and examines the latest empirical data with respect to both pharmacological and behavioral interventions. Anxiety Free $16.95 In his new book, Robert L. Leahy, Ph.D., author of the best-selling book The Worry Cure, turns his attention to anxiety. Leahy looks at the origin of anxiety and teaches you how to outsmart your fears for a less stressful life. He lays out the symptoms associated with some of the most common anxiety disorders, including panic and agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress and provides simple, step-by-step guides to help you overcome the fears associated with each of these. Anxiety Free explores how preprogrammed rules of reaction, which are a product of the evolutionary process, keep us in the grip of anxiety. For each anxiety disorder, Leahy shows how our fears and unchallenged assumptions stand in the way of our freedom. Using Leahy’’s methods, which are based on the best psychological treatments available, you will be able to work toward a life free from the apprehension, tension, and avoidance associated with anxiety. |
