The psychotherapy treatment. Research has shown that cognitive-behavioral therapy can be highly effective for several anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder and social phobia. CBT, as its name suggests, has two main components, cognitive and behavioral. In cases of social anxiety, the cognitive component can help the patient question how they can be so sure that others are continually watching and harshly judging him or her. The behavioral component seeks to change people’s reactions to anxiety-provoking situations.
The pharmacological treatment. When medication is indicated SSRIs, such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil) and escitalopram (Lexapro) are generally recommended as first line agents. SNRIs such as venlafaxine (Effexor) are also effective.
Benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin) and diazepam (Valium) are also sometimes indicated for short-term or PRN use. They are usually considered as a second line treatment due to disadvantages such as cognitive impairment and due to their risks of dependence and withdrawal problems. MAOIs such as phenelzine (Nardil) and tranylcypromine (Parnate) are also considered an effective treatment and are especially useful in treatment resistant cases; however dietary restrictions and medical interactions may limit their use.
Treatment options available include lifestyle changes; psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy; and pharmaceutical therapy. Education, reassurance and some form of cognitive-behavioral therapy should almost always be used in treatment. Treating Children with Anxiety is not that easy, observation should be applied and make sure that everything will already be back into normal.

Family-Based Treatment for Young Children with OCD $24.95 Young children with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) often require professional help to overcome their symptoms. This workbook corresponds to a treatment program specifically designed for children ages 5-8 and their families. Your therapist will tailor the program to your child's developmental level and family situation. Parents have an important role to play in treatment; you will be attending all sessions and working at home with your child. In therapy, your child will face feared situations without avoidance or rituals until anxiety decreases. This is called exposure with response prevention (E/RP); sessions will tackle E/RP tasks of increasing difficulty. A reward plan will motivate your child to practice E/RP tasks at home with your help. You and your child will also be learning "tools" to manage and reduce OCD symptoms. For example, you will learn how to best use attention with your child and how to model positive behavior. Your child will learn how to "boss back" OCD symptoms and use a feelings thermometer to rate anxiety. This workbook includes all the information your family needs to participate in treatment. Chapters on "parent tools" and "child tools" review the skills learned in session. Instructions for E/RP assist with home practice. There are also tips for maintaining gains after treatment ends and how to handle future symptoms. Monitoring forms, reward charts, daily practice records, child forms, and session homework sheets are provided. As a family, you can successfully fight against your child's OCD and improve life at home. |

Children and Trauma $23.95 Every parent worries that harm might come to his or her child. And even if the child comes through an incident physically unscathed, parents are still concerned about the emotional toll. More often than not, when a child has experienced trauma, all that feels normal, good, and secure about life is derailed. Childhood traumas range widely in their severity and impact. A car accident, an earthquake or flood, being attacked by a dog, undergoing a frightening medical treatment, having lunch at McDonald’s during a robbery – all are distinctly different events yet all provoke common symptoms of psychological trauma. These may include nightmares, fears about leaving home or abandonment, and newfound fears (dogs, for example, if the child was attacked by a dog). Sometimes there are less obvious underlying problems, such as a general depression or suicidal thoughts. Regardless, the entire family is affected by the child’s pain and anxiety. In the wake of such traumas, the territory of everyday life can be unfamiliar and frightening – not only for the child but for the parents as well. Fear for one’s child and a sense of loss for all that was normal , coupled with self-blame and a feeling of failure, can temporarily disrupt the parents’ sense of security. Children and Trauma teaches parents about the effects of trauma and offers a blueprint for restoring a child’s sense of safety and balance. Cynthia Monahon, a clinical child psychologist, presents a tangible plan for parents who find themselves in the midst of such a crisis. Further, she describes in detail the warning signs that a child needs professional help. Monahon’s straightforward, comforting style, coupled with case studies from her ownpractice, offer hope and reassurance for parents who are helping their children cope with trauma. |
