Understanding and Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by Abramowitz, Jonathan S. Edition , 1 $43.88 Among the most prevalent and personally devastating psychological disorders the development of a cognitive approach to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) has transformed our understanding and treatment of it. In this highly practical and accessible book, Jonathan Abramowitz presents a model of OCD grounded in the most up-to-date research that incorporates both cognitive and behavioral processes. He then offers a step-by-step guide to psychological treatment that integrates psychoeducation, cognitive techniques, and behavioral therapy (exposure and response prevention). Unlike other manuals for the treatment of OCD, this book teaches the reader how to tailor the choice of techniques and delivery modes for individuals presenting with a wide range of specific OCD symptoms, such as contamination fears and cleaning rituals, fears of harm and compulsive checking, symmetry and ordering, and severe obsessions with mental rituals. The techniques are illustrated with numerous case examples; clinical forms and handouts are provided for use with patients. A final chapter suggests strategies for overcoming common obstacles in treatment. |

Cognitive Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Guide for Professionals $33.77 A Cognitive Approach to Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Based on research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, this manual presents for the first time a purely cognitive approach to treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This approach avoids the highly distressing exposure component of exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) that is commonly used to treat the symptoms of OCD. Not only does this cognitive therapy (CT) approach open up the option of psychotherapy to those OCD sufferers who resist exposure-based therapy, it also holds great promise for treating OCD sufferers with mental rituals as well as those who struggle concurrently with depression, anxiety, and other symptoms. The strategies described in this book focus intensively on the intrusive thoughts that can trigger negative beliefs and drive compulsive behaviors. The manual begins with a brief review of current facts about OCD. Then it describes how cognitive therapy can be applied to OCD. The several treatment modules that follow outline a brief three-to-four session approach therapists can use to help clients make real progress on their OCD beliefs and behavioral symptoms. Each module is complemented by a series of client worksheets and handouts. This purely cognitive approach to OCD offers a number of benefits including: CT avoids the discomfort of prolonged exposure and response prevention (ERP) The therapy can be conducted entirely in the therapist’s office CT is especially useful for patients with mental rituals and neutralizing strategies The treatment is based on NIMH-funded research and is empirically supported "Wilhelm and Steketee have produced a step-by-step manual that is eminently practical and well grounded in theory and research. This book provides an evidence-based alternative to traditional behavioral treatments for OCD. It will be required reading for all of my students who treat OCD, and it should be read by anyone who works with this complex problem. It will certainly influence the way I approach OCD in my own practice." -Martin M. Antony, Ph.D., ABPP, director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, ON, and author of When Perfect Isn’t Good Enough and several other books |

The Relationship Between "Not Just Right" Experiences and Symptom Dimensions of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. $82.68 Anticipatory anxiety has played a large role in contemporary views of understanding and treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, many individuals with OCD do not report anxiety, but rather report a sense of things being "not just right" prior to engaging in repetitive behaviors. The primary purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between "not just right" experiences (NJREs) and symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Relationships of OCD symptoms with obsessive beliefs and other domains of psychopathology were also examined. Three-hundred eighty two undergraduate students were enrolled in this study. OCD symptoms were assessed using the Obsessive Compulsive Inventory–Revised (OCI–R). NJREs were assessed using the Not Just Right Experiences Questionnaire–Revised (NJRE–QR) and the Obsessive-Compulsive–Trait Core Dimensions (OC–TCDQ). Participants also completed the Beck Depression Inventory–II (BDI–II), the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS). Stepwise regression analyses suggested that ordering and mental neutralizing were predicted by NJREs. Washing, checking/doubting, and hoarding were predicted by NJREs and harm avoidance. Obsessing was predicted by harm avoidance. Overall, our findings suggest that NJREs play an important role in the various symptoms of OCD. Clinical implications, methodological considerations, and areas for future research are also discussed. |

Cognitive Behavioural Processes Across Psychological Disorders: A Transdiagnostic Approach to Research and Treatment $138.63 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has established itself as one of the most effective therapies for treating a wide range of behavioral problems. However, research and treatment in this field typically adopts a DSM driven ‘disorder-focused’ approach–researchers and clinicians target a specific disorder, try to understand its aetiology and maintenance, and try to develop more effective strategies to treat the disorder. This book proposes a bold and original approach to understanding these disorders, one that focuses on what they have in common. Instead of examining in isolation, for example, obsessive compulsive disorders, insomnia, schizophrenia, it asks-what do patients with these disorders have in common? It takes each cognitive and behavioral process–attention, memory, reasoning, thought, behavior, and examines whether it is a transdiagnostic process-i.e., serves to maintain a broad range of psychological disorders. Having shown how these disorders share several important processes, it then describes the practical implications of such an approach to diagnosis and treatment. Importantly it explores why the different psychological disorders can present so differently, despite being maintained by the same cognitive and behavioral processes. This book will give clinicians and researchers a valuable new theoretical base for assessing and treating psychological disorders. |

Psychotherapist’s Guide to Psychopharmacology By Michael J. Gitlin $27.95 The last twenty-five years have witnessed an explosion of knowledge about the influence of brain biochemistry on mood and behavior and about pharmacological approaches to treating mental and emotional disorders. A substantial portion of patients seen in clinical practice are taking some medication or might usefully be advised to do so. But many clinical psychologists, social workers, and counselors need additional information in order to better treat patients already on medication, know when and to whom to refer new patients for psychiatric consultation, and work collaboratively with psychiatrists when appropriate.
Michael J. Gitlin’s indispensable first edition of The Psychotherapists Guide to Psychopharmacology has now been updated and revised — this new second edition now reflects major changes that have influenced the clinical arena in the last five years such as the recent release of DSM-IV and the domination of the psychopharmacological field by the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as fluoxetine (Prozac). The Psychotherapists Guide to Psychopharmacology, Second Edition also now includes coverage of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and contains updated sections on the new antipsychotics for schizophrenia and the increased use of anticonvulsant mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder. The book also includes other significant changes that have influenced the field over the last few years, such as brain imaging studies, research in obsessive compulsive disorder and social phobia, and such prominent topics in women’s health as pregnancy, PMS, postpartum disorders, and breast feeding.
This revision of an already established guide will again be an essential reference for all nonmedical professionals involved in treating mental and emotional disorders. |

Understanding And Treating Anxiety Disorders $29.95 Understanding and Treating Anxiety Disorders: An Integrative Approach to Healing the Wounded Self provides in an effective new way to treat anxiety disorders that shows how, by evaluating the specific needs of a client and selecting appropriate approaches from several different therapeutic methods, one can identify and treat the specific emotional basis for a particular anxiety. This book includes an integrative theory of the etiology of various anxiety disorders and an integrative psychotherapy that incorporates psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, humanistic-experiential, and biomedical perspectives on anxiety. The approach is based in the premise that no single psychotherapeutic orientation is sufficient for the comprehensive and durable treatment of anxiety disorders. The integrated theories are first presented for anxiety disorders in general and then are applied to specific anxiety disorders, including specific phobias, social phobias, panic disorder with and without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The author proposes that, in all of these variations of anxiety disorders, wounds to the client’s sense of self are always central, and only by taking a tailored approach to a client’s specific wounds can healing begin. This research-informed and clinically tested approach to helping clients resolve anxiety disorders will be of great interest to mental health practitioners of all orientations. |
